Have Argentina and England **Shortened Too Far** in the Outright Market?
In the 24 hours bracketing 21 June 2026, two outright lines moved hard. Argentina went from American +1000 to +800 — decimal 11.00 to 9.00 — after Messi’s hat-trick in the 3-0 over Algeria. England moved from +700 to +550 — decimal 8.00 to 6.50 — after a 4-2 win over Croatia. Both shortenings happened on a single 24-hour window. The Debater asks whether the prices have moved too far, or whether they were still too long before.

- Argentina: 11.00 → 9.00 (decimal), implied probability ~9.1% → ~11.1%. Source: FOX Sports / FanDuel, 21 Jun 2026 ET.
- England: 8.00 → 6.50, implied probability ~12.5% → ~15.4%. Same source, same day.
- United States shortened to 34.00; Ecuador and Uruguay drifted (UR to ~100.00).
- Top of the board: France 4.70, Spain 6.50, England 6.50, Argentina 9.00, Portugal 11.00, Brazil 13.00, Germany 13.00, Netherlands 16.00.
- For an AU punter the question is liquidity, not certainty — the 9.00 Argentina line is short of the model and the 6.50 England line is fair-to-short; one is fadable, the other is hold.
TL;DR — Where the Edge Sat 24 Hours Ago
The shortenings were rational. They were also pre-existing under-prices. Argentina at 11.00 was the longest a defending champion has traded at a tournament in 16 years. England at 8.00 priced the 4-2 over Croatia as if Croatia had been a 6.00-priced match — which it was, until England played it. The reflex on big moves is to fade; the Debater take here is more nuanced. Fade Argentina at 9.00. Hold or top up England at 6.50. Buy Norway, sell USA.
The Case For Following the Money
Argentina earned the shortening structurally
The Algeria match was 3-0, but the underlying read is more emphatic. Argentina kept Messi healthy, took the lead inside 25 minutes, and saw out the result without conceding. The Algerians had Mahrez benched for tactical reasons — he returns for Jordan, no rotation excuse there. Argentina’s only injury concerns are at right back (Montiel doubtful, Molina returning); Romero is available, the keeper rotation favours Martínez. The 9.00 from 11.00 is a price catching up to facts.
England’s win exposed Tuchel’s pragmatism
England’s 4-2 over Croatia was the most consequential MD1 result for the outright market — not because of the score, but because of the lineup. Tuchel played Bellingham–Foden–Saka–Kane in attack, kept Rice at 6, and gave Chalobah his debut at right-back after Livramento’s hamstring. The XI was the modern, attack-minded England fans have been demanding for 20 years. 6.50 from 8.00 is the market correcting for "this England is different".
USA shortening to 34.00 is the smart underdog play, not a mug bet
The USA shortened on the back of two MD1 wins (one over Türkiye, one 2-0 over Australia). Host-nation home advantage is real — the 2014 USA at home in their own qualifying environment routinely outperformed price. 34.00 carries an implied 2.9%; Kalshi (a US prediction market with its own price discovery) moved from 3.9% to 5.5% after the Australia win. The smart-money instinct shorted USA, and a books-vs-prediction-market arb of ~2.6% sat on the table briefly.
The Case Against
Argentina at 9.00 is now short of fair
Our model has Argentina at ~12% to win the tournament given the bracket — that is implied 8.33, so 9.00 is mildly value-against at current price. The shortening from 11.00 was correct; the price moving past 8.50 would be over-correction. At 9.00 the right Debater call is hold or fade, not chase.
England at 6.50 priced the defence as if Tuchel solved it
England conceded two to Croatia. They have Saka (Achilles), Rashford (hamstring), Rice (hamstring) all doubtful for the Ghana match on 23 June. The 4-2 was a beautiful attacking display; it was not a coronation. If England draw Ghana, the line goes back to 7.50, possibly 8.00. 6.50 looks fair-to-short, not value. The honest model number is 14% — implied 7.14.
The USA outright move is a leverage play not an investment
34.00 implies 2.9%. Our model has the USA between 3.5% and 4.5% — closer to 22.00–28.00. The shortening was correct; another shortening to 25.00 would be the over-correction. The bet here is small, not large, and dependent on USA reaching the knockout stage as group winners (already done) and pulling a winnable R16. If the bracket gives them Sweden or Japan in R16, they have a path. If it gives them Spain or France, they don’t.
Norway at 31.00 is the line nobody is talking about
The market shortened Argentina and England. It barely touched Norway. 31.00 carries 3.2% implied; Norway have won 11 competitive games in a row, Haaland has scored in 11 straight, and they sit in a Group I they are expected to win. If you want a long-shot, Norway at 31.00 is the better-shaped exposure than USA at 34.00.

The lines that moved (Argentina, England, USA) are now fair-to-short. The lines that did not move (Brazil, Norway) are where the remaining value sits.
A note on Brazil
Brazil at 13.00 is the trickiest call. Raphinha is out v Scotland (thigh), Rodrygo and Militão are out for the tournament, and Casemiro carries a one-yellow suspension risk. But Neymar is back available for the Scotland match. The 13.00 line is the same as Germany’s — and Brazil have looked the more dangerous side of the two so far (3–0 v Haiti, 1–1 v Morocco). Our model says they should be 10.00. That gap is the most actionable mispricing left on the board.
Verdict
- France 4.70 — best book on the board; if you take one position, take this one.
- Brazil 13.00 — the largest mispricing remaining; small-to-mid stake.
- Norway 31.00 — long-shot with the structural read behind it.
- Argentina 9.00 — shortening is done; hold existing positions, do not chase.
- England 6.50 — fair; hold or top up only on Ghana win at 23 June without injury fallout.
- Spain 6.50 — fully priced after the Saudi Arabia win; fade if exposure is heavy.
- USA 34.00 — small leverage play; cap stake.
What to Watch on 22-24 June
- France v Iraq, 22 Jun: If Les Bleus win comfortably (>=2 goal margin), France 4.70 likely shortens to 4.20–4.40.
- Norway v Senegal, 22 Jun: A Norway win shortens 31.00 toward 22.00. The window to buy 31.00 closes by 8:00pm ET 22 Jun.
- Argentina v Austria, 22 Jun: A win plus a Messi goal shortens Argentina to 7.50–8.00. Position before kickoff.
- England v Ghana, 23 Jun: A scratchy win or draw drifts England back to 7.50–8.00. The over-correction window starts here.
- Scotland v Brazil, 24 Jun: A Brazil win shortens 13.00 to 9.00–10.00. The value window closes here.
